Seven artists will receive a $10,000 unrestricted grant for demonstrating critical and rigorous work in the field of contemporary art, as well as an ability and commitment to making future substantial contributions to the visual arts. For the third year, RHMF is offering the Stanley Hollander Award in honor of Stanley Hollander, a passionate supporter and collector of emerging artists who helped RHMF grow in Los Angeles since 2013. The Stanley Hollander Award is given to one of the eight LA grantees for a grant award that totals $15,000.

The 2018 Stanley Hollander Award winner is Janiva Ellis.

Through a closed-call nomination process—which included over 50 distinguished LA-based curators and arts professionals—100 artists were invited to apply for the grant. View the portfolios of the 2018 Los Angeles nominees here. An independent jury selected the grant recipients through a competitive selection process. Jurors for the 2018 Emerging Artist Grant in Los Angeles included:

  • Catherine Taft, Deputy Director & Curator, LAXART
  • Susan Hort, Co-founder, Rema Hort Mann Foundation
  • Keith Mayerson, Artist & Professor of Art, USC
  • Travis Diehl, Writer & Critic
  • Max Presneill, Artist & Curator, Torrance Art Museum

Since 1996, Rema Hort Mann Foundation has awarded the Emerging Artist Grant to promising visual artists in the greater New York City metropolitan area. The goal of the Emerging Artist Grant is to support an artist at a critical time in the development of their practice. For an Emerging Artist Grantee the funds can mean another year in their studio, or a year’s worth of supplies, but most importantly, the grant offers artists the time to create their work unfettered by the monetary restrictions that often hinders their creative production. Past Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grantees have included Njideka Akunyili Crosby, who this past year was awarded a MacArthur ‘Genius’ Fellowship, Mary Reid Kelley, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Keltie Ferris, Rashaad Newsome, Virginia Overton, Dana Schutz, Sarah Sze, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley, among others.

Rema Hort Mann Foundation offers eight Emerging Artists Grants in both New York City and in Los Angeles annually through a nomination process.
