Artist Community Engagement Grant

 

Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Artist Community Engagement (ACE) Grant provides financial support—individual grants for up to $1,500—to projects that are community-based and foster communication, community participation, and cultural exchange. The goal of the ACE grant is to make a positive and lasting impact on the artist community, especially in support of artistic collaboration, special projects, and community engagement. 

The grant is available to a wide range of project formats, including panel discussions, artist talks, public presentations, workshops, web-based activities, lectures, screenings, publications, and other public events or cultural exchanges. We support projects that encourage cultural or traditional sharing, locally or across borders, as well as projects that broaden audiences in a specific community.

RHMF only accepts applications online via Submittable. Applications for the 2022-23 award cycle open Friday May 13th, 2022 and close midnight Friday, July 1st, 2022. Late applications will not be considered. Please review the Application Guidelines below to determine your eligibility and the application requirements. 

Eligibility and Requirements

You will be asked to confirm your eligibility in the Online Application Form. To be eligible, you MUST:

  • be based and primarily working in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area.
  • As of July 1st, 2022 you cannot be enrolled as a full-time student.

Artists may apply as an individual or collaborative. Collaborating artists should select a lead artist to be the main contact for the ACE Grant Application. Artists must be based and primarily working in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. Grants are awarded at the discretion of the jury, up to $1500 and may be used to pay for expenses related to the proposed project, including artist fees. Artists awarded the ACE grant are asked to provide documentation of the project to RHMF one year after the grants are distributed. Proposed projects should be completed by Fall 2023. 

Online Application Form

In the Online Application Form, via Submittable, we will ask for:

  • Contact Information 
  • Social media Information
  • Discipline
  • Artist Statement (100 word limit): Provide a brief narrative paragraph that describes your work and creative practice specifically. If you’re applying as a collaborative, the statement should reflect the collaboration.
  • Artist CV (1–2 pages): Provide a current resume related to your creative practice. Collaborative groups should submit a resume that shows a history of collaboration when possible. Word files are preferred; PDF files are acceptable.
  • Project Summary: Provide a short paragraph describing your project and its goals.
  • Community Engagement Proposal: Provide a statement detailing the public engagement component in the proposed project. The public engagement component is required to be free, open to the general public, and must be completed by October 30, 2023. (150 word limit)
  • Project Proposal: Include a detailed description that includes who will be involved, what the activities are, and where and when the project will occur. Include how the project  relates to your practice as an artist or collaborative. (1-2 pages)
  • Budget: Provide an itemized list of the project’s costs, including artist fees and the total project’s costs.
  • Income: Provide any income that has already been designated to the project if applicable.
  • Grant Amount Request: Provide the amount you are requesting for this grant up to $1,500.
  • Work Sample (images): Follow the guidelines below.
  • Image Checklist: Provide captions for each of your images. Include Title, Date, Medium, Dimensions, Location (if applicable).
  • Video/Audio Work Sample (optional): Follow the guidelines below.
  • Video/Audio Caption (optional): Include Title, Date, Original Format, Location (if applicable), Original Running Time.

Work Sample Guidelines

The Work Sample is a critical element of your application. Prepare a well-organized Work Sample that represents your best, most recently completed work. You must prepare your files, file names, and links as described below before you upload files or include links on the Online Application Form. You may submit up to 10 image, audio, or video files total which represent your current artistic practice. You may include past installations and earlier work (if relevant), however, please be sure that your most current body of work is presented first.

Digital Images

Before uploading files to the Online Application Form, you MUST save them on your computer in the following format:

LastName-FirstName-##.jpg For example:

  • Smith-John-01.jpg
  • Smith-John -02.jpg
  • Smith-John -03.jpg
  • Files must be saved as JPEG files, 800 pixels in the longest dimension at 72–120 dpi.
  • During the selection process, images will be viewed one at a time as a projection.
  • Portfolio Checklist should include the following format: Title, Date, Medium, Dimensions, Location (if applicable). Checklist should correspond to the number indicated in your jpeg file name.

Example:


  1. TITLE, DATE, MEDIUM, DIMENSIONS, LOCATION (required only if a work is site-specific)

***Prints, slides, catalogs, original artwork, and other materials are not accepted.

Video/Audio Work Sample

You may additionally submit links if your work is time-based. (Do not use this option to submit a slide presentation or trailer of your work; the video/audio work sample should directly represent your artwork.)

Provide web link addresses to video or audio clips hosted on external sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc). Provide the password for all password-protected videos in the ‘Video Notes’ section.

You may submit a video (which can contain one clip or multiple clips) that has been edited down to the allotted time. If your clip is longer, provide the cue point to start and stop in the ‘Video Notes’ section.

  • Submit clips of video totaling no more than six (6) minutes of footage all together (in total).
  • Indicate the cue time for each video (i.e. 0:00–3:00 OR 1:45–7:45, etc.).
  • During the selection process, videos will be projected.
  • Each clip will be played for no more than the allotted time from the cue point; start times for each clip should mark the beginning of a segment that best represents your work.
  • Video clips are accepted as Web Links to videos hosted on external sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
  • Provide passwords for password-protected videos if applicable.
  • Ensure that hosted online Work Samples follow the above guidelines and are accessible online at least five months beyond submitting this form.

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed under the following criteria:

Artistic Strength and Merit of Work

Feasibility (capacity to realize proposed project)

Community Engagement (in alignment with the grant’s criteria)

RHMF is committed to maintaining diversity in its grant programs in terms of cultural background, geographic distribution, and areas of expertise.

A jury of NY based arts professionals, representing a broad and diverse range of experience, will review the applications in a series of rounds. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application in October 2022.
