Wayde McIntosh

Social Media has drastically altered the way and ways we connect with people. At an instant we can connect to strangers across the globe. Every aspect of your lives from the mundane to the extraordinary is shared, nothing is off limits . However, this shift in Social interaction has abandoned personal interaction in favor of remote interaction through Social Media platforms.

My recent drawings are an exploration and collaboration with strangers through Social Media to make portraits. Participants send me selfies of themselves mimicking emojis of their choice. The inherent nature of Social Media means that I can receive these selfies at anytime with unpredictable limitations and risks. In some cases participants set limitations so that I am only able to see their pictures once, and then the picture is deleted.

The resulting portraits are done at a small scale to mimic the the scale at which we have grown accustomed to viewing images on Social Media. The negative space that isolates each portrait acts as a metaphor for the physical isolation that is involved in order to engage others on Social Media. Like the participants themselves the portraits are never physically seen by the viewer but are only posted to Social Media, prompting the cycle to repeat it self.
