What Is My Work About? 
My paintings are about color, space, form, scale and surface. These are the elements that repeat, transfer, modulate and change within each painting and from one painting to the next. It is these elements that I want to bring to the viewer?s attention with as much force and immediacy as possible. That is why my paintings are floral still life images. I want the viewer to be hit hard at first with a very recognizable image of art and then to explore the fast and slow rhythmic modulations in form and color and the collapsing and creating of space that occurs across the surface of my works during longer viewing, perhaps leading to an experience of how these same events occur from one painting to the next.

 

Artist Statement

My paintings are about color, space, form, scale and surface. These are the elements that repeat, transfer, modulate and change within each painting and from one painting to the next. It is these elements that I want to bring to the viewer’s attention with as much force and immediacy as possible. That is why my paintings are floral still life images. I want the viewer to be hit hard at first with a very recognizable image of art and then to explore the fast and slow rhythmic modulations in form and color and the collapsing and creating of space that occurs across the surface of my works during longer viewing, perhaps leading to an experience of how these same events occur from one painting to the next.

All my paintings have the same pictorial structure. The vase always sits in the bottom center of the picture plane. The flowers occupy the center portion of the painting and the bouquet is scaled to almost fully occupy the rectangle with either the edges of flowers, leaves, or the vase touching, coming close to, or slightly breaking the edge of the painting on all four sides.

This format has been repeated consistently in my work since 2008 for two reasons. It establishes a repetition against which many other changes and experiments can occur. And, it is immediately recognizable as both an art image and an image of art.

The paintings in images (1-6) and (14-20) were made at an easel with a still life of fake flowers in a vase as my model. I looked at the still life and took from what I saw to develop paintings through which color relationships could burst forward toward the viewer and space could shift and slide.

In the works represented in images (7-13) I took photographs of my easel paintings and had them printed at a much larger size on primed canvas.   Then I re-stretched them and painted back into them creating another layer of inter-relationships by juxtaposing hand painted marks with digital prints of hand painted marks. I also increased the size of the work, at first bringing small paintings up to a medium size and then making them as large as I could given the limitations of the printers and my desire to maintain the width and height ratios of the images.

The paintings in Images 1-6 are my most current work. They all have metallic painted backgrounds to frustrate the naturalism expected from still life painting and to assert a flatness that the volumetric and overlapping spaces of the flowers, leaves and vases must resist. Black shapes appear at the bottom of each of these paintings that are meant to suggest shadows, reiterate rhythmic patterns from the rest of the painting and participate in the play of repetition and difference that operates throughout thus suggesting a way for all my work to be viewed.
