Ray Ferreira

w h e n a m i blaqlatinx from occupied Lenape lands called New York, NY: the illegitimate EEUU. Another thead:Corona, Queens<a spacetimemattering<a materialdiscusive (dis)/continuity: [the Caribbean, the Greater Antilles, Hispañola, the Dominican Republic —> Corona, Queens] : histories

From these histories, I build an interdisciplinary practice. I use my Englishes, Spanishes, and other body languages to create a banj[1] criticality. That is, my work is about turning up with the grls. It is about swerving past white cishet patriarchy. w h e n a m i

My works, much like my body, spiral through digital and analog media, the here and there, and the then and now. I use iridescence and rhythms (aka systems) to explore how my body is a place where histories are made and remade -an attempt to cruise a quantum poetics. In their entangled states Englishes, Spanishes, and other body languages spiral, dance, and twirl.

My works, much like my body, spiral through digital and analog media, the here and there, and the then and now. I use iridescence, projection, darkness, text, and rhythms (aka systems) to explore how my body when am i is a place where histories are made and remade -an attempt to cruise a quantum poetics.

The work represented here hopes to create spaces that are both seductive, and contemplative —a place where the body can begin to dissolve. Basically, they don’t function too differently than our bodies writhing, gyrating, spiraling in the club. That beside that already exists in from the swaying bodies of femmes, those swinging tresses both real and differently real, to the yas kweens on the streets, to the siren songs that lead people to jump to their deaths rather than remain in bondage. Agential realness is a temporary beside (insert:paraontology).

In this work I try to hold the multiplicity that is existing under the domination of a supposedly pure white light. Celebration is simultaneous to mourning—>the long after–>as the sun rises–>long after the deep dive into a sea of bodies–>to see the bleached buildings and the crisp clapboard development–>to return to violence after–>w h e n a m i–>to return–>to make a re turn different turn–>to dive further into the sea just like so many did/do–>past the trenches–>past new horizons–>to reach the glittering mycelial forests called stars–>in the glittering lights new marronage—>can the mess be the dance where turnt saliferous bodies are made and remade on their own accord

This work builds spaces that are speculative like all spaces: a fantasy felt, an ocean of phantasmagoria. To mourn is really to remember, relive, bring back to life, to give life.

[1] The term banj, for those who do not know, is etymologically linked to the word banji. Those who are not Black queers may have encountered this term in Jenny Livingston’s simplistic and patronizing documentary Paris is Burning, which, while problematic in many racist and classist ways, remains an important access point for ballroom for outsiders. The doc is also highly memeable (read Aria Dean’s Rich Meme, Poor Meme for more)
