Owen Westberg

Comparable to a map legend, the accumulated idiosyncrasies in these paintings establish a diagram for deciphering the world they represent. Palladian architecture, embroidered fabric, and mirrored wine are harmonized by a palette of licorice blacks, off whites, pale blues and pinks, rich greens, and blonde yellows. The motifs straddle representation and abstraction, creating a fiction in which history is compressed into the present, and where familiar scenes become strange or dissolve into the swishes and dabs of a brush.
