Artist Statement

I am a multi-ethnic adoptee and have spent my life carefully observing the debris of communication. I consider material such as gesture, space, and object as cultural artifacts of language. In my artistic practice, I take advantage of the relationship video has to time and our experience of reality through its imagery. My need to observe and investigate has led me to travel to many countries and immerse myself in diverse cultures, looking for the familiar. I personally gather my footage, and often find my subjects during the process of investigation. My practice is anchored in ethnography, psychology, and sociology, because of their established practices in empirically studying family, behavior, and communication. After scouring the footage I have collected, I select individual components to activate, and then meticulously manipulate the imagery through the use of masks, stretching, compressing, juxtaposing, cutting, and repeating. In my work, I speculate on the meaning of ordinary movements, proximity of family members, and relationships with space and objects as a method of describing alienation, belonging, intimacy, and protection.
