Artist Statement

I use video and 3d printing to examine the relationship between viewers, screens, and pixels. In my 3d prints I print out matrices of seamlessly connected pixels to create tangible images. By printing out only interconnected pixels, I produce topological digital images that do not require a physical surface in order to be perceived. To physically create these pixels through 3d printing I design large catalogs of seamlessly connected type characters that are used to replace the pixels in digital images. This practice addresses the history of the pixel by specifically tapping into the NASA programs that propagated both the terminology and canonized idea of today’s pixel. Currently the images I utilize in my 3d prints mostly come from the raw image feed on NASA’s Curiosity Rover on Mars. These images are converted into my customized pixel system and are processed into 3d models that are eventually made physical. Through this practice I make the inaccessibility of celestial objects and the intangible dimension of a pixel rendered concrete. Objectively this opens up a new kind of image accessibility that combines both typography and 3d printing, enabling a viewer to carefully “read” and perceive images simultaneously.

In my video work I demonstrate the peculiar circumstances of display screen integration throughout daily life. The environments in my videos are constructed in both digital and real space which are setup to reciprocate with one another. The viewer of the videos loops between both spaces seamlessly which are tethered together by an image or screen. This body of work is a response on how digital systems are perpetually usurping our viewing habits to all things in reality. These videos are calculated and sardonic; they serve as fantastical scenarios that catalog and invent situations that influence contemporary perception. This body of work aims to unveil the control digital media has on viewership.
