Lucia Hierro

My work explores the body as a collection of fragmented signifiers that includes language, taste, and culture. I address these ideas across a broad platform of techniques that include digital media, collage, and felt constructions.  As a Dominican American artist, my status as a bi-lingual female artist requires that I work across multiple media in much the same way I work across gender and culture on a daily basis. The use of The New Yorker in my work has been a way to tackle ideas of exclusion and privileged knowledge.

The series titled “Bodegones”(“Still-Lifes”) uses the historical form as a point of entry to analyze the different ways we define culture by creating a space where these meanings intersect. My ideas of home and community find their way into the work via the specificity of objects, imagery and material that I feel have become shared or communal cultural markers.
