Artist Statement

My current work utilizes ceramics, painting, and sculpture to celebrate small moments in life. One moment that I keep coming back to is something I witnessed when I lived in Russia after college. On the Trans- Siberian railway, at a stop, a man outside his cottage noticed a young woman looking out the window of the train. He began collecting flowers, walked over to the train, and threw them up to the girl as we pulled away from the station.

Such a romantic and simple gesture, but unforgettable in its beauty. It was a snippet in time, ordinary to some, poignant for others, but what I think truly makes up life.

In Russia they often hang rugs on their walls for warmth and decoration. For this series, I’m utilizing the patterns and borders of rugs on sculptural vessels and ceramic tiles. These personal narratives weave themselves into the borders: sometimes the borders are erected and other times they erode, lending, at times, an isolation and a freedom to the subjects of the work.
