Artist Statement

Everything in this world is responding to human attention.  The tone of a mother to her son, the wide-eyed gaze of a little girl on a billowing cloud, the force of a leap into the night air!  What little do we realize while doing it, how the world spins and carries with it our stories.

I am working through a narrative rooted deep within me.  My paintings are inspired by the weight of family trauma that is passed down from generation to generation.  This includes my own emotional trauma and psychological states, as well as my perspective I have of others emotional sensibilities.  Although I consider my work autobiographical, it also has the power of the universal.

My practice illustrates emotional and psychological mental states.  These can be described, or discussed through image, form and color.  They do not need to seek descriptive words or explanations.  The figure has the capacity to present internal struggles. I’ve focused my practice on the figure because of its capacity to convey and delve into subjective and inherent struggles.  I often depict a solitary figure with a sense of power and perseverance in a foreboding, apocalyptic landscape.  My works are most often representations of myself.  Whether literal self-portraits, or images projected onto new characters, they originate from within me. I am interested in the sensuality of paint and the ability it has to seduce the viewer.  Within my paintings, the land is key in setting the tone, which reflects the emotional state of the individual. I think of the landscape the figures are in as anesoteric space in which they are moving through something mentally as well as apart from themselves, always distant yet intimate.
