Artist Statement

As a representational painter, I apply paint as a cognitive mapping device for how I perceive my surroundings. Raised in a home adorned with Renaissance iconography, I was introduced to painting as a pictorial window – a portal that occupied both physical and psychological space. I employ the myriad attributes of paint including fluid washes, gestural brushwork, thick impasto, and roaring manufactured color for material diversity and a sensory overload. The large oil paintings are formally constructed by assembling, dismantling, and rebuilding visual grids and invented systems.

The antique fasteners in my painting, Metalware, function as symbols or visual homonyms for vessels and appendages. The staples and nails are enlarged in order to be directly referential to human anatomy. This scale shift makes the imagery simultaneously abstract and figurative – as unknowable as the future and as fundamental as molecules.

In my viscerally rendered oil paintings, I choreograph spatial and material oppositions that suggest a state of “inbetweeness” and suspense. By painting machine-made hardware and digitally-constructed environments, I am searching for a tension that results from my individual, expressive hand. I alternate between thick and thin paint application, high-pitched and local color, flat space and deep perspective – all of which are push-and-pull devices that serve to unite a pictorial world full of contradictions and paradox. In culturally shifting times, I see making a mark as an act of optimism and self-assertion, one that reflects my love for paint’s materiality, for the richness of the world, and for my process of examining the person I have become and am becoming.
