Artist Statement

Our audio-visual work in video and installation animates tensions between conventional and conceptualized storytelling. Using distantiating strategies including ventriloquism, characters’ lines are dubbed with multiple voices singing in rough harmony. The fusion of individuals into something multiple and inclusive taps into darker desires to control and manipulate. How possible is self-determination? What is the relationship between free will and mediatized desire?

The videos are often punctuated by our reflection on the creative process itself. As collaborators, we become a collective “I” that control but also unite with the narrative’s subjects, who are often friends or acquaintances. In our self-reflexive search for the right form, we enfold questions of how to create into those of how to live under present conditions, where individual desires are given voice but are also instrumentalized to obscure underlying configurations of power.

Visually, the videos and installations produce and reveal illusion. Hyper-realistic yet highly artificial scrims set the action in uncanny worlds: the illusion of depth is flattened and distorted. The scrims reappear in the physical installation, allowing viewers to enter open tableaux and regard one another as well as the work. Spaces become penetrable and porous, opening up for the viewer to see between cracks.
