Artist Statement

My studio practice shifts between printmaking, video, electronics, and sculpture – my work is, ultimately, absurd, depressing, frustrating and potentially beautiful. Despite the reoccurring themes of defeat found throughout my practice I believe that my work is not that of a cynic but instead that of a Romantic; its central operation is to make the insignificant appear monumental, the empty full, and the shallow deep.

Although I am a resident of New York City, for many years now, my day‑job has given me the opportunity to live and work in Maine during the summer. The opposing nature of the mechanical environment of New York and the agrarian setting of rural Maine, require me to constantly adapt my sense of location and environmental perspective. The instability created from balancing these two environments gives me unique insight into both locations, but simultaneously prevents me from fully identifying with one or the other. The distance created from my feeling out of place in familiar environments has led to my current infatuation with re‑visualizing external spaces as well as internal psychological spaces.

Furthermore, I mean to explore the perception and revision of every day surfaces, objects and environments. To put it more dramatically, my practice can be described as desperately looking for the ghost in a potentially vacant machine.
