Hands on hips, a Heroine in leather surveys the horizon with Sardanapalus’1 eyes.
She is Marianne Faithfull’s “Rebecca” in Girl on a Motorcycle (1968) and Tura Satana’s “Varla” in Faster Pussy Cat Kill Kill (1965). Both Rebecca and Varla are rebellious, sexually active, independent– and too hot to live for both women are hit by trucks at the end of their films.
JO the Lion (image no.19) cannot be dispatched with; Her power cannot be commandeered…
Shadows on the wall signal the approach! Huntress, Lioness, Stuntwoman, Bouncer. ULTRA. DOMINA. Drawn. Stamping around the perimeter. There is Danger, there is a Storm, but not in here, not now. (Diana hangs up her spurs.) Now here come the dogs, the tenderer things. The ground is rich with female charisma. The pods dangle in the breeze. The Mimosa blossom twirls. Here and there some smaller drawings pin into the shapes of the shadows beneath them, nested into the matriarch’s flexed calf, flat foot.
The drawings are made for the place, to bring to it. To arrange it’s crevices. The drawings are tender shoots…overworked or undercooked, too vulnerable.
Still, the Mistresses guard the proceedings.
Amid the eventual calm, the oyster appears, the mouthless tongue, the fleshy exposure…
There is Venus!(Image no.5)
