What is my work about?

In my painting, I deconstruct spaces while experimenting with patterns and human presence in remembered interiors. My subject is the moment in time where a familiar domestic space and its inhabitants are in the process of being forgotten yet remain laced with information based on patterns, contours and exaggerated colors. I strive to capture the energy and history of human presence in remembered space.

Artist Statement

My paintings stem from recollections of my childhood in St. Petersburg, Russia. When my family left suddenly for the United States at the age of eleven, all that remained was clear but nostalgically haunting mental imagery of my former apartment. My geographic distance and my longing for the dwelling which I can no longer call home create an internal struggle; such a struggle I am compelled to describe on my canvas. I deconstruct spaces and shapes, often in exaggerated color, to create hovering and uneasy optical effects that blur lines of real, remembered and fantastical space. Furthermore, by combining clashing planes and overlaying patterns replete with historical significance to time and place, I create the sensation of fleeting human inhabitance in my work. In my recollections, the energy of vacant apartment rooms still feels inescapably familiar.

I find it necessary for my work to take root in representation. Yet, I am fascinated with something that cannot be materialized. This combination allows me to work freely somewhere on the border of abstraction and representation. My paintings begin with an image which I draw out , alter and play with based on both my memory of the space and needs of the abstract composition. The information I release to my viewer relates to universal clues and patters that come from my research of memory retention. As a result, even though the space is based on my personal recollection, it triggers recognition of specific sensation experienced within a space similar to that which I describe. This technique supports my pursuit by making the familiar patterns disorienting. I flip the patterns up, not subjecting them to perspective to create the field in space hover on the surface. At the same time, the shape where this flat pattern resides suggests perspective thereby flipping the plane in a subtle optical illusion.
