Artist Statement

A consistent interest in my work has been evoking a sense of space between an authentic and a more self-conscious voice. Structural decisions about how the paintings are made are informed by this interest. In my most recent work, an improvisational approach to image making is also foregrounded within this structured yet self-conscious approach to painting.

I often develop work in series, where one painting seems to be a companion to the next, while simultaneously remaining discreet and resolved in itself. This way of working allows for themes to develop laterally, and might imply that the work could be read. The paintings mounted on aluminum sheets are examples of this open ended yet structured way of working.

There is a staginess in my larger paintings on canvas that I construct through depictions of shallow space and tight compositions. I collage photographs I have taken into the paintings where they have a parenthetical role, bracketing in more visual content without disrupting the overall image of the painting.

What I attempt in painting has also been informed by my experience making experimental music, which I have done in both solo projects and in bands. My occasional collaborative efforts, most recently with Mira Dancy at Know More Games, have also significantly informed my process. In both circumstances, the immediacy and intimacy of collaboration has significantly expanded my approach to painting.
